CUSCO

The Alqa Museum Restaurant : A hidden treasure at the Ollantaytambo Inca village in Cusco.

Alqa is a cultural space founded by Peruvian designer Johana Sarmiento and Italian photographer Antonio Sorrentino. Opened in mid-2022 in Ollantaytambo, the Andean art museum is housed in a century-old property featuring an authentic Inca wall. Initially a gallery store, Alqa has evolved into a museum showcasing traditional art from local communities.

Sorrentino also oversees the restaurant and bar, essential for Alqa’s financial sustainability, reducing reliance on the museum store. Alqa aims to create unique dynamics distinct from traditional cultural centers.

The dining room’s intimate darkness, reminiscent of Inca homes, highlights the stone walls and floors, and the natural wood of the tables and chairs. The entire process was completed by the museum directors and their local team.

La Picanteria Restaurant : a private home in the streets of Surquillo Lima.

The season returns from a time when people barely noticed the existence of restaurants and instead found the kitchens of improvised dining rooms in private homes.

In these cases, simply knocking on the door, waiting for it to open, and asking if there was anything to eat was sufficient. Typically, it was a stew or spicy dish to accompany the chicha while chatting with friends.

Everything turned out to be a culinary event, with popular kitchens dressed in their finest attire.

Fly over the Nazca Lines in Ica on a private charter

Located in the southern desert of Peru, the Nazca Lines are geoglyphs—drawings created by removing rocks and earth to form “negative” images. These designs have remained largely intact for 500 to 2,000 years. Scientists believe most lines were made by the Nasca people, who thrived from around A.D. 1 to 700. Theories about their purpose vary, with Professor Paul Kosok and archaeologist Maria Reiche suggesting they served as an astronomical observatory for solstices and celestial events.
